THE WEEK THAT WAS
Going undefeated in a week isn't as rare as you think - 43 times its been done to win the week... and a few others times, someone has had an undefeated week only to not win the week, as someone else does it and has a better TB. Personally, that's happened to me a few times - and this week, it happens to Matt "The Coca-Cola Cowboy" Mink, who gets an 8-0 record... but finishes 2nd to Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers, who goes 8-0 and gets his 5th weekly win of his own career.

As the playoffs loom, this was a solid week for several people who needed to climb in the rankings - 3rd place goes to likely MVP winner Drew "Slash" Morris... 4th is Bradley "Pinky the Wiser" Pinky... Drew "The Grassman" Warren gets 5th... Hurricane Rhett is in 6th...  and Zack "The Attack" Graves takes 7th, all of them at 7-1.

Also at 7-1 is Young Garrett Cheney, who gets 8th... Roth from Wyoming in 9th at 7-1, and at 6-2, Steven "The Principal" Ray.

Also finishing:

6-2: Tad "The Dynasty" Roose... Jeremy "Miss Independent" Burgess... Big Eddy McB... Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky... Coach DiB... Aussie Nate Johnston... Defending DFC Champ DMOsborne... Big Tom Johnson...

5-3: Mark "The Mighty" Gainey... James "The Playoff Maker" Hawbaker... Pinky "Pinky the Pinky" Pinky... Jonny Oz... Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod... Tyler "TSPSBotDFC" Campbell... Mikey Nipp... Danny "3D" Powell... Jenni Ersnt... Trey "The Answer" Cartledge...

4-4: Yours Truly... The Big Wasyluka... Chris "YO TEACH" Croyle...

3-5: Eddy McB Jr... Mitchy "Pinky the Younger" Pinky

LIES, DARN LIES & STATISTICS

  • Its time to talk a little playoff stats... especially in the rivalry between Mark "The Mighty" Gainey and Drew // Morris, both with 2 DFC titles, and both chasing a little history - Gainey sits at 186 playoff wins, with Drew at 185 - though Drew has more playoff appearances (19) than anyone, including Mark (16)
  • Plus, Mark Gainey holds the record for most consecutive playoff appearances (8, from DFC III to DFC X), while Drew is currently second, with a streak of 7 (DFC XIII to DFC XXIV) breaking it by missing last season... with an asterisk, as Drew made the DFC25 Scramble - but Scramble appearances did not count as postseason. Only those who made it to the next round (Coach "Viva la Mi'Ami" DiB and Jacob "Pinky the Pinky" Pinkerton)
  • Longest active playoff streak?  Yours Truly, thank you, with 6 straight leading into this season, and Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod with 4, leading into this season
  • Mikey Nipp's outstanding Hasha MVP winning season last year broke a 19 season drought between playoff seasons.
  • Current drought? Big Tom Johnson hasn't seen the playoffs since DFC XI, 14 seasons.  Trey "The Answer" Cartledge is approaching 7 seasons without the playoffs, while Chris "YO TEACH" Croyle hasn't been there since DFC XIX (6 seasons)... and Mitchell "Pinky the Younger" Pinky also hasn't been there since DFC XIX - but Mitchy won a title that season. Surprisingly, Big Eddy, who has 15 postseason appearances, hasn't been there since DFC XXI, 4 seasons
  • Tad "The Dynasty" Roose also has an interesting playoff history - he had made it 9 times, and although out of 24 previous seasons, is somewhat average, he won 3 DFC titles - so 1/3rd of his playoff appearances found him hoisting the trophy - and he's been to 4 DeuceBowls, and 5 DFC Final Fours, so over 50% of his playoff runs resulted with him in the semi-finals
  • Lets talk 60 win seasons, which is somewhat of a benchmark for success. 49 gets you a winning season, while 50+ tends to be pretty good, but 60+ is great.
  • First, only two DFC'ers have ever won 70... Jonathan Osborne in DFC XII and Steven Ray in DFC XVIII (neither won titles that year).  Eight DFC'ers have won 69 games in a regular season - active DFC'ers include Mitchy "Pinky the Younger" Pinkerton and Big Eddy Mac in DFC XVIII, Yours Truly in DFC IX... (notable that the retired Brad "Lawdawg" Latta did it 2x in three seasons)
  • The most? Again, this lends to how long they/we've been in the league, but here is the entire active DFC roster and their 60+ win seasons:
Mark Gainey (14)... Yours Truly (11)... Drew Morris (10)...  Tommy Mc (9)... Eddy McB (9)... Steven Ray (8)... Tad Roose (8)... Jenni Ernst (8).. Jonathan Osborne (7)... James Hawbaker (6)... Matthew Pinkerton (6)... Hurricane Rhett (6)... DMO (5)... Zack Graves (5)... Tim Wasyluka (5)... Lt Dan Sellers (3)... Eddy Mc Jr (3)... Mikey Nipp (3)... Daniel Powell (3)... Trey Cartledge (3)... Bradley Pinkerton (3)... Mitchy Pinkerton (2)... Tom Johnson (1)... Tyler Campbell (1)... Garrett Cheney (1)... Chris Croyle (1)... Drew Warren (1)... Roth from Wyoming (1)... Aussie Nate (1)
  • Awaiting their first 60 win season... Pinky Pinkerton... Garrison Ryfun... Coach DiB... Matt Mink... and rookie Jeremy Burgess (who is 11 wins away from 60 for the season, but currently sitting at 79th all time.)
  • With 18 games left, Garrison is 8 away, Pinky is 11 away, and Burgess is 11 away.  Coach will need to go 18-0 to get to 60, and Matt is 20 from 60, and the math doesn't work well there.
  • If you are wondering why this edition of LDL&S is the reason results are so late, you'd be right. This is a lot of number crunching. =)

THE WEEK THAT WAS

Y'all know how Jimmie Johnson won 5 straight NASCAR titles, a 6th a few years later, and then a 7th, making it 7 titles in 11 years? Yet no one really talks about the greatness? That's Steven "The Principle" Ray.  Just trucking along, with his two championships, in the mix every year - at 7-3, this week he takes his 6th weekly win, doing what he usually does - starting slow, then turning it on as the playoffs loom. Don't be surprised to find him in his 5th Final Four this year.  Well done.

Coming in 2nd, tied, is Defending DFC Champ DMOsborne and Mark "The Mighty" Gainey, both at 7-3, and then a 4-way tie for 4th, with Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers, Drew // Morris, and Garrison "The Pride of Ellijay" Ryfun, then James "Maybe the Playoff Maker" Hawbaker in 7th, and Jeremy "Miss Independent" Burgess in 8th, again, all at 7-3.

Jonny Oz gets 9th and Roth from Wyoming in 10th, both at 6-4

Also Finishing:

THE WEEK THAT WAS

Father/son competitors are always fun, as The McBroom duo has been a legendary tag team throughout DFC History - both have had up and down years throughout their careers, but two things about Eddy McBroom's 9th career weekly win this week - first, he won the week at a definitive 7-1, much needed as the postseason looms large. Second, its the first time in 24 years that both Eddy Sr and Eddy Jr won a week in the same season - Eddy Jr won in Week 4, and now Eddy Sr here. Good job folks

For the rest of the Top 10... Defending DFC Champ DMOsborne finishes 2nd at 6-2, with Tyler "The Self Proclaimed Sexy Beast of the DFC" Campbell in 3rd (6-2), Matt "The Coca-Cola Cowboy" Mink in 4th (6-2) and Young Garrett Cheney in 5th (6-2)

The rest of the Top 10 is at 5-3, with Roth from Wyoming in 6th... Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky in 7th... Garrison "The Pride of Tipton" Ryfun in 8th... and tied for 9th, Mitchy "Pinky the Youngest" Pinky and Drew // Morris.

Also Finishing:
5-3: Drew "The Grassman" Warren... Trey "The Answer" Cartledge... Steven 'The Principle" Ray... Jenny Ernst... James "Maybe the Playoff Maker" Hawbaker... Coach DiB... Pinky "Pinky the Pinky" Pinky... Braddy "Pinky the Wiser" Pinky...

LIES DARN LIES & STATISTICS
Welcome back to the random numbers of 25+ years of the DFC - all numbers are real, all stats are authentic
  • First, congrats to Tad "The Dynasty" Roose, who finally crossed 1400 wins lifetime (now 1408)
  • Also, in the Regular Season All Time Top Ten (total wins not including playoffs) Jonathan Osborne is 6th (1412), Mark Gainey is 7th (1410) and DMOsborne is 8th (1408) put that section of the Top 10 in a flurry.
  • Also important to note that it took DMO 25+ seasons to get there, Jonathan 24 seasons, and Mark 23 seasons - of course Mark Gainey has 2 titles and DMO has 1. So suck it Johnny Oz.
  • The Big Wasyluka crossed 1300 (1301 now), while Steven Ray is 18 away from 1000 wins. Chris Croyle crossed 900 wins (904), Aussie Nate got to 200 (201)
  • And if rookie Jeremy Burgess can get to 57 wins this year, he'll be in the Top 75 all time
  • Lets look at one of my fave stats... the .501 / .500 streaks - basically how many weeks in a row has someone finished over 500 (5-3 or 6-4 or better) and same for finishing at least .500 (4-4 or 5-5 or better)...
  • Currently the +.500 streak record is held by Matt "The Great Bear of the North" Latta, DFC VI champion, a streak created at least 15 years ago.  To tell you how hard it is to do, the only streak started before this season is Drew Morris, who is currently at 8 straight weeks. Matty Pinky and Trey Cartledge both have 5 straight weeks. Good luck
  • For .500+, the record is still held by Tad Roose, at 45 weeks, which legit had Tad going 3+ full seasons without a losing record - Yours Truly is now at 36 weeks, which has climbed to 2nd all time (it always feels funny putting my records up, but trust me, if I were going to cheat, I would have won a title years ago - I'm the Buffalo Bills of the DFC)
  • Mark Gainey is at 14 weeks, Drew Morris, Eddy McB and Steven Ray are all at 12 weeks
  • Finally - I struggle with the idea of counting DFC XXV's Scramble as playoff spots. It was Jacob Pinky and Coach DiBello that came out of the scramble, so they definitely have "postseason" on their record, but the other 15 in the scramble?  I looked it up and the NBA does not count teams in the play-in tournament as playoff appearances, unless you win your game and actually get to the big bracket - so final decision... no, those in the DFC Scramble last year were not considered "in the playoffs"
  • All that to say - Garrett Cheney holds the record now for 23 years in the league and nary a playoff spot. If he doesn't make it this year, that puts him at 2086 games with no postseason (he's never made it - the Week 12 Collapse of DFC V is still DFC Lore)
  • Mikey Nipp held the record with 1812 games (18 seasons) between playoff appearances, making it in DFC V and then not again until DFC XXV
  • Tom Johnson is now in the lead in this category, as if he doesnt make it this year, he'll have gone 1624 games between postseason spots - his last appearance was DFC XI in 2008
  • Finally - Whats in a (Nick) Name?  Who are these people and why do they have Nicknames?  The Pinky Brothers - Matthew, Bradley, Jacob, and Mitchell Pinkerton - Matthew being the eldest (hence, "Pinky the Elder"), Bradley wrote a book ("Pinky the Wiser"), Jacob has been called Pinky for years ("Pinky the Pinky") and Mitchell is the baby boy ("Pinky the Younger")...
  • Jacob Roth lives in Wyoming... and has been known as Roth from Wyoming as long as I've known him.   Nathan Johnston lives in Iowa, but heralds from Australia, so, again, I've known him as Aussie Nate since I met him.
  • One random day in DFC XII or something, Tyler Campbell, then a fresh faced student, declared himself the "Sexy Beast of the DFC".  He does have a title, so there may be some bearing there. But yeah, that's what I label him now, or "SBotDFC" if I'm feeling brief.
  • Finally, three time champ Zack Graves - why "The Attack"?  It comes from an old Lego commercial, one that sings "Zack, Zack, he's a Lego maniac!"  Maniac didnt work, but "attack" did, and it stuck, at least on my end. Hence Zack "The Attack".
